Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 Rear Tire

The S21 already had a strong reputation — OEM fitment on serious sport bikes, trusted by street riders who pushed harder than average. Bridgestone didn't tear it up and start over. They studied exactly where it fell short and fixed those things. Better dry grip. A compound that works before the tire is fully warm. Less slippage in the contact patch. Wet performance that doesn't make you nervous. The S22 came out of that process, won Motorrad Magazine's sport tire test back to back, and earned its place as the go-to rear tire for riders who want performance without babysitting their rubber every mile.
Available in 150/60R17 and 180/60ZR17 — covering everything from middleweight sport bikes to full liter-class machines.

Key Benefits

  • Triple compound rear with 5LC (5 Layer Compound) technology — each zone of the tire does a specific job properly
  • Fine particle silica center compound puts more silica in the contact patch for better wet grip
  • RC Polymer via NanoPro-Tech bonds silica and polymer — wet performance and wear resistance in one compound without compromising either
  • ULTIMAT EYE™ contact patch technology — the same tool used for FIM Endurance World Championship tire development — reduced slippage compared to the S21
  • Updated shoulder groove ratio evacuates water more efficiently at lean angles in the wet
  • New compound works at lower temperatures — grip from the first corner, not after a warm-up lap
  • Handles lighter and steers quicker than the S21 without giving up mileage
  • Back-to-back Motorrad Magazine sport tire test winner

Key Features

5LC — Five Layer Compound TechnologyMost sport rear tires run two or three compounds. The S22 runs five. The center compound handles straight-line stability and smooth transition from upright to lean. The shoulder compound drives cornering grip and forward acceleration. The edge compound manages rotational stability at steep lean angles. Each zone is optimized for what it actually encounters during riding, which is why the tire feels consistent whether you're cruising, mid-corner, or accelerating hard on exit.

Fine Particle Silica and RC Polymer

The center compound uses silica particles smaller than those found in conventional tires. More silica at the contact patch means better wet grip — and that's where most street riders need confidence most. The RC Polymer compound, developed through Bridgestone's NanoPro-Tech, bonds silica and polymer at a molecular level so they work together rather than against each other. The result is a tire that grips in the wet and doesn't wear out doing it — two things that usually trade off against each other in a sport tire.

ULTIMAT EYE™ Technology

Bridgestone used this proprietary contact patch measurement system — the same one applied to their racing tire development — to visualize how the S22's contact patch actually behaves during riding. They identified and reduced slippage at the rear of the contact patch compared to the S21. That reduction is what gives the S22 its characteristic lightness in the steering and its improved grip without shortening tire life.

Updated Tread Pattern

The shoulder groove ratio is higher than the S21. More grooves at the shoulder means water evacuates faster when you're leaned over in the rain — exactly when front and rear grip matter most. Pattern rigidity is also optimized, which contributes directly to the handling precision riders and Motorrad testers both noted immediately.

Compatibility

The 150/60R17 fits middleweight and mid-displacement sport bikes running a 17-inch rear rim — common on 600cc class machines from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki.
The 180/60ZR17 fits liter-class and large-displacement sport bikes on a 17-inch rear — common applications include the Yamaha R1, Suzuki GSX-R1000, Honda CBR1000RR, and Kawasaki ZX-10R among others.
Always verify fitment against your motorcycle's owner's manual before ordering. Select your size above to confirm the correct part number for your bike.

Performance & Riding Experience

Both sizes share the same core character — light steering, quick turn-in, and grip that shows up before the tire is fully warmed through. On the 150/60R17, that translates to a responsive, confidence-building feel on a middleweight that makes the bike feel more capable than the rider expected. On the 180/60ZR17, it means a wide liter-class rear that transitions into corners with less effort than the size suggests and stays planted under the kind of acceleration that exposes weak tires immediately.
In the wet, the fine particle silica and updated grooves keep both sizes honest. Grip fades gradually as conditions worsen rather than dropping off suddenly — which on a sport bike at speed is the difference between a manageable situation and a dangerous one.

Safety & Care Tips

  • Break it in properly. 100 miles, conservative lean angles, no hard acceleration out of corners until the mold release is fully scrubbed off the surface
  • Check pressure cold before every ride. Sport tires are sensitive — a few PSI either way changes handling and wear rate noticeably
  • Don't mistake improved cold performance for cold-weather invincibility. The S22 grips earlier than the S21, but give it a few miles before pushing hard on a cold morning
  • Replace the valve stem at fitment. Small cost, easy to skip, worth doing every time

Package Includes

  • 1 x Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 Rear Tire in selected size — Blackwall, Tubeless
Rim, valve stem, and installation hardware not included.

Ideal For

  • Sport bike riders who want street performance that works on their commute and their favorite back road without a tire swap in between
  • Riders moving up from the S21 who want better dry grip and lower-temperature confidence without losing the wet behavior they relied on
  • Middleweight riders on the 150/60R17 who push harder than average and want a tire that keeps up
  • Liter-class riders on the 180/60ZR17 who need a rear tire that handles real power on real roads
  • Anyone doing occasional track days who wants a street tire that won't embarrass them when the pace picks up
