Some colorways play it safe. The Squadron isn't one of them. It's a bold, race-ready look that stands out on the track without crossing into gimmick territory. Matched with the right gear setup, it looks exactly like what it is — a serious boot worn by a serious rider. The SG22 is Gaerne's current flagship motocross boot and the natural successor to the SG12 — a boot that spent years winning championships and building one of the most loyal followings in the sport. Gaerne didn't chase a trend with the SG22. They took direct feedback from the riders who wore the SG12 day in and day out, including pro-level enduro and motocross racers, and fixed what needed fixing while leaving what already worked alone. The 3D toe box is one of the most practical improvements on the whole boot. It reduces the height between the sole and the shift lever, which means less foot movement needed on every gear change. Over the course of a moto or a full enduro day, that adds up. It's one of the first things riders coming from the SG12 notice on the bike.Ankle protection runs through the Dual Stage Pivot System — two mechanical limit switches that stop your ankle before it reaches a dangerous range of motion. Hyperextension, hyperflexion, lateral movement — the system handles all three without locking the boot up completely. Your ankle moves naturally until it reaches the limit, and then it stops. The front shin guard adjusts between two positions and combines with the three-position upper locking lever to let you tailor the fit properly around your leg and whatever knee brace you're running. The memory foam ankle liner has been redesigned to mold to the shape of your ankle rather than just sitting around it. Better stability, more comfort on longer rides, and it holds its shape over a full season of use. Grip Guard rubber on the inner leg keeps your leg where it needs to be on the shroud. Front air vents feed into 3D internal channels that move air through the boot and keep heat and humidity from building up during hard riding.Aluminum superlight buckles. Dual density sole with microshock heel. Handcrafted in Italy. Available in sizes 9 through 12.

Do the SG22s need a break-in period?Yes, give them a few rides first. They come out of the box feeling stiff, which is exactly what you'd expect from a boot built to this standard. Most riders find them noticeably more comfortable after three or four proper rides. First moto isn't the right time to judge them. How does the fit compare to the SG12?The SG22 is wider across the forefoot. Gaerne specifically addressed the narrow fit that some SG12 riders — particularly those with wider feet — had issues with. If the SG12 ever felt tight across the front or pinched the little toe, the SG22 is the better fit. The revised ankle foam also works better for riders with thicker ankles over longer sessions. Will these fit over knee braces?Yes. The upper locking lever adjusts in three positions and the shin guard moves between two, so you have real adjustability to work around most knee brace setups. It's one of the areas Gaerne specifically improved coming from the SG12.Are these suitable for enduro riding or just track use? Both, without question. The SG22 was developed with input from top-level enduro racers and the protection, ventilation, and sole feel translate just as well to a long enduro stage as to a motocross track. What actually makes the ankle protection worth trusting? It's a proper mechanical system, not just a stiff boot. The Dual Stage Pivot System uses two physical limit switches that allow normal ankle movement and stop it right before the range where injury occurs. That's a fundamentally different approach to protection than building a boot so rigid it restricts everything.Do these run true to size? For most riders, yes. The SG22 does fit slightly different from the SG12 because of the wider footbed, so if you're used to the SG12 fit, keep that in mind. If you're between sizes or have a wider foot, sizing up is a sensible call. Always check Gaerne's size chart against your actual foot measurement before ordering.
