It reduces the height between the sole and the shift lever, which means less foot movement needed on every gear change. Over the course of a moto or a full enduro day, that adds up. It's one of the first things riders coming from the SG12 notice on the bike.Ankle protection runs through the Dual Stage Pivot System — two mechanical limit switches that stop your ankle before it reaches a dangerous range of motion. Hyperextension, hyperflexion, lateral movement — the system handles all three without locking the boot up completely. Your ankle moves naturally until it reaches the limit, and then it stops. Do the SG22s need a break-in period?

Yes, give them a few rides first. They come out of the box feeling stiff, which is exactly what you'd expect from a boot built to this standard. Most riders find them noticeably more comfortable after three or four proper rides. First moto isn't the right time to judge them.

How does the fit compare to the SG12?

The SG22 is wider across the forefoot. Gaerne specifically addressed the narrow fit that some SG12 riders — particularly those with wider feet — had issues with. If the SG12 ever felt tight across the front or pinched the little toe, the SG22 is the better fit. The revised ankle foam also works better for riders with thicker ankles over longer sessions.

Will these fit over knee braces?

Yes. The upper locking lever adjusts in three positions and the shin guard moves between two, so you have real adjustability to work around most knee brace setups. It's one of the areas Gaerne specifically improved coming from the SG12.

Are these suitable for enduro riding or just track use?
