The SG22 is Gaerne's flagship motocross boot — and the Future Dusk colorway is one of the sharper looking options in the lineup. Muted, modern, and distinctive without trying too hard. But like every version of the SG22, the colorway is the last reason you'd buy it.Gaerne has been building boots in Italy for over 60 years. The SG12 held the flagship spot for years and built a serious reputation on the backs of championship wins and riders who refused to switch to anything else. The SG22 Future Dusk takes everything that made the SG12 great and addresses the things that needed attention — wider footbed, better ventilation, a revised ankle liner, and a toe box redesign that actually improves how you interact with the bike. That 3D toe box is worth talking about. It lowers the profile between the sole and the shift lever, which cuts down the distance your foot has to travel on every gear change. It sounds like a small thing until you're mid-corner and need a clean upshift without adjusting your foot position. Riders who helped develop the SG22 — including the 2022 EnduroGP World Champion — flagged this as one of the most noticeable improvements over the SG12.The Dual Stage Pivot System protects your ankle the right way. Two mechanical limit switches stop the joint before it reaches hyperextension, hyperflexion, or dangerous lateral movement. It's not a stiff boot that restricts everything — it lets your ankle move naturally within a safe range and then stops it where it counts. The front shin guard adjusts in two positions and works with the three-position upper locking lever, so you can set the fit around your calf and knee brace properly rather than just jamming it in and hoping for the best.Memory foam ankle liner has been redesigned to actually take the shape of your ankle over time rather than just sitting there. Grip Guard rubber on the inner leg keeps your leg against the shroud without death-gripping the bike. Air vents near the front plate feed into 3D internal channels that keep fresh air moving and stop heat and moisture from building up through long motos or full enduro days.Aluminum superlight buckles. Dual density sole. Microshock heel. Handcrafted in Italy.Available in sizes 9 through 12.

Do the SG22s need a break-in period?Give them a few rides before you judge the fit. Out of the box they feel stiff — that's expected from a boot built to this standard. Three or four solid rides and they start to feel like your own. Don't make up your mind after the first moto. How do these compare to the SG12 in terms of fit?The SG22 is noticeably roomier across the forefoot. Gaerne widened the footbed specifically because SG12 riders with wider feet had complaints. If the SG12 ever pinched your little toe or felt tight across the front, the SG22 addresses that. The ankle also uses slightly less memory foam, which actually helps riders with thicker ankles stay comfortable over longer rides. Will these work with knee braces?Yes. The upper locking lever has three adjustment positions and the front shin guard moves between two — you can work both to get a proper fit over most knee brace setups. It's one of the things Gaerne specifically improved on the SG22.Is the SG22 only for motocross or does it work for enduro too? Both. Some of the key development feedback came from enduro racers, and the boot reflects that. The ventilation, ankle protection, and sole feel are just as relevant on a long enduro stage as on a motocross track. What makes the ankle protection on the SG22 different from other boots? Most boots protect through stiffness alone — restrict movement enough and you reduce injury risk. The SG22 uses a mechanical system with two actual limit switches that allow natural ankle movement up to a safe range, then physically stop it before damage can occur. It's a more precise approach than just building a boot that's hard to flex.Do these run true to size? For most riders, yes. That said, Gaerne sizing can vary slightly with foot shape, and the SG22 fits a little differently than the SG12 due to the wider footbed. If you're between sizes or have a wider foot, sizing up is a reasonable move. Always measure your foot and check Gaerne's size chart before ordering.
